I have a pond that is in the 1/2 acre range, and I have a plant growing in it that I was hoping to identify.

A few of the local lakes are having issues with salvinia, so I was thinking that this could be some that was transplanted by birds or something.

Is that what it is? And if so, is there anything I can do other than simply trying to pull it all out?

Thanks a lot.

It looks like american pondweed to me.

Read this and tell me what you think: http://www.texasinvasives.org/plant_database/detail.php?symbol=SAMI7

Thanks.

I agree it doesn't look like the plants in those pics...but it does resemble the ones in these.

I seem to recall that we had this same plant last year, and it died off during the heat of the summer.

Thanks again.

Is it rooted or free floating? How big are the floating leaves, and do they have a mid-rib? It's hard to judge the size of the plant in the pictures that you took without something in the picture to get an idea of the scale of the leaf.

Another great I.D. site for pond plants:

It appears to be free floating. I've attached another pic of me holding some of it to give you an idea of the size ove the leaves.

I don't think it's salvinia, since the leaves don't have the texture that salvinia seems to have.

My big question is whether or not this is something I should be concerned with.

Thanks for all of your help guys.

I honestly can't tell. Maybe put some in a zip loc bag and take it to your counties NRCS office for an ID?

Monte - Your mystery plant is variable-leaf pondweed (Potamogeton diversifolius).
It gets its name from the two types of leaves along the stem.
Submerged leaves are long and narrow while the surface-floating leaves are spoon-shaped.
