I have a water fountain that is run from a huge water fall pump that used to be in our water garden. I have the pump sitting 1foot off the ground on a milk crate. It is sitting in about 3 fit of water right now..

What water depth should I have the fountain in and also is this aerating the pond at all? Or do I need to buy an aerator instead? The pond is 7/10ac and 16ft deep by the dam.

What motor size is the pump, how many GMP will it pump, and what are your electric rates per Kwh?

Here is the spec sheet on it.
http://www.macarthurwatergardens.com/little-giant/WG-65%20Spec.htm

Its a little giant wg70 - 1900GPH

Would it be better if I got a different fountain head for it? It has a 3 tier head right now, would a bubbler be better?

Leave that fountain for decoration. It isn't moving enough water. You need at least one "turn" per day in the pond. You know your pond area/volume better than I do, but by the figures you gave, you need something that will move between 1.8 and 3.6 million gallons of water per day. Using that pump that you have for aeration is like trying to put out a forest fire with a garden hose.

To figure out what one "turn" is, calculate how many gallons of water are in your pond. 1 foot of water, that covers one acre is 325,851 gallons. You have to move enough water to expose at least the whole water volume of your pond to the air once a day, twice a day is even better.

This is why pumping air is more cost effecient than pumping water. Look at the chart and see how many gpm is moved.
