I've had a subscription to F-F-G Magazine since I was in 6th or 7th grade. It has a tremendous amount of trapping info, and it also has an extensive list of advertisers that sell trapping supplies. I flip thru the latest issue to find supplies vs. checking the internet. http://www.furfishgame.com/

I myself am a new reader of FF&G. One of my Northern buddies got me a subscription.  I've read a couple of issues now, and I'm liking it. It's more of a Mom and Pop magazine in a good way. Less glitz, and more feet on the ground type stuff. I'll definitely renew when the time comes.

Ok, strange question, would the rats move into my pond during the fall and move out sometime during the winter? I have seen no fresh activity in or around the pond and I have not caught any. These creatures aren't exactly the brightest things I have ever chased but I am stumped!  seantOH

If the pond is completely iced over during the winter, there's no way for them to escape. If there was a drastic change in water levels, (i.e. higher water levels) the ice could have moved away from shore, leaving enough open water for them to escape. If not, and the water rose a couple of feet, they could have drowned in their dens.
Converesly, if the water level dropped, it could have frozen them in their dens, and they starved to death in the den.
Sometimes the water drops enough to leave a bit of a gap under the snow, and a mink will find it's way to the open area around the pond. They love muskrats and will kill them in their dens.
Also, because this winter was long, if there wasn't enough food in the pond for them, they could have starved to death.
Now, with the ice melting around the edges of the ponds or completely opening up, is the time that the males will move from pond to pond, looking for a mate.

Thanks for the response! Several things for me to ponder. The water level remained consistent. There was a lot of ice in central Ohio. I was actually hoping to get a rat carcass for mink cubby hole sets next winter.  Maybe a lack of food or the mink. Hopefully they stay out of my pond... I have too much invested... time and money! Lol! Thanks again! seantOH

While driving yesterday I had a choice. Thump-thump a muskrat, or swerve and get close to a pothole, maybe hitting it. Thump-thump it was......

Some Conibear 110s in their path, a .22 with a good sighted-in scope, or Rex, should be pretty effective of ridding your pond of muskrats and all things resembling muskrats.
