I have tested a gallon of muddy pond water with 1/8 tsp of gypsum. it cleared in about a week (it is still stained the color of the mud). Am going to try a 1/4 tsp just to see. My ? is there a right time of year to start trying to clear a pond? Warmer weather for better plant growth etc. I'm in SE Texas, so we're not talking extremes.

Jim,
Look under [General Questions] topic Muddy Water, very good advise!

Ric,
The little that I now know is because of this site and Mr. Duffie. I might have missed a post on timing and will go back and check it out again.

Did not find anything on trying to clear a pond at any certain time of year. My gallon jug of pond water with 1/8 tsp of gypsum seems to be getting even clearer (been about 2 1/2 wks now). Will probably use this formula and start the process in the next couple of weeks.

JIm, I'd try to figure out why the pond is muddy. Chemical clearing might be a temporary deal.

Dave, my pond was clear up until about 3 summers ago when for the first time I know of the shallow end almost dried up. I jumped off in it with my tractor and front end loader and scoped it out to about 5'. It never cleared after that. I have horses that water and swim in it but it always settled. I guess I got in to some new dirt and the +'s and -'s aren't working together.Jim

Well I have a new new jug of water that I am testing with 1/4 tsp of gypsum. Its been going since Sat. Seems I brought a minnow in with the water and it is still swimming around in the jug. This jug of water seems even muddier than the first. Is it possible that different areas of a small pond can be like that?
