Thanks. I have a drain from my kitchen sink that pokes thru the foundation wall, and runs above ground for about 8' before diving underground to empty into the drywell. I had problems with it freezing in temps below +20°F. I ran your traditional pipe heat tape on the bottom of it, and wrapped it with insulation. That worked until the temps approached 0°F. I ended up taking a 20' section of gutter heat tape, wrapping it around the pipe like a candy cane, and leaving it on when temps are +15°F and below. It's easily turned on and off from the back porch.
For the wnter of 2014/2015, I shouldn't have that problem as the whole house plumbing system will be changed.

Insul-seal insulated PVC does wonders as well. Expensive, but worth it...
Pex has been the most common replumb material. Watch the sizing though as the fittings constrict so any high flow locations should be sized up.
CPVC is crap.
