I dump extra bait fish just because I enjoy it. I think I have sustainable food source with shiners and CNBG, but axtra can't hurt I figure.

Fishing never seems to be unenjoyable weather I'm angling for the pond, in the pond or for the table....

Went fishing today as a matter of fact....

I released 5 speckled sea trout (+\- 16")
One blue fish 12 inches

Sunil , this is an anticlimactic release of them, just for you .... ;-) wink

Bobby, I may have not been clear that my comments were tongue in cheek. I think what you are doing would be a blast.

CJ, I have only been able to establish that blue fish have wide range if salinity tolerance. I have not found any definitive publication that says if they can go to zero or not....
So I'm just gonna try it and see....

Also someone asked about the feeders.. I know redfish will take to pellets.. Nothing is feeding a lot right now.. I think this spring things will fire up around the feeder....

I wonder if the flounder would taste as good now that it's been in fresh water.

Sunil,
I am not sure if freshwater will effect the taste? I do not think it would, I have caught Tilapia in salt water around here and they tasted just as muddy and gross as the ones I got from freshwater.

CJ,
This is actually not from the main pond. This is a smaller experimental pond I have been messing with.

That was my wife that took the video of the flounder attack,

I found this researching today ...Thought it was interesting..

short version,
Conclusions: these observations lead to the conclusions that juvenile goliath grouper have the ability to osmoregulate in freshwater and should be considered a marine euryhaline species. IE: Live in fresh water!

Goliath Grouper

Long Version
Osmoregulation of juvenile marine goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) in low-salinity water
Lury N Garca, Clara L Sierra, Jeiver Perez, Frank Esquivel, Frank A Chapman

Abstract

Summary

Background: goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) is an economically valuable marine species and an excellent candidate for domestication for aquaculture purposes. If this grouper can osmoregulate in lowsalinity water, its cultivation can provide socio-economic benefits, for both coastal communities and the mainland agricultural sector. Objective: to evaluate the osmoregulatory capacity of juvenile goliath grouper when exposed to low-salinity water. Methods: juvenile goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) were either directly or gradually transferred from seawater to freshwater to test osmoregulatory ability. Body weight was assessed during acclimation and blood samples were taken to measure total osmolality and electrolytes. Results: all fish survived the transfer to freshwater and were maintained for up to 12 days after termination of the acclimation trials which lasted 72 hours. Juvenile goliath grouper were hyposmotic (342-462 mosmol/kg) to seawater and hyperosmotic (272-292 mosmol/kg) to freshwater. The gills and kidneys were found to have principal roles in the osmoregulatory processes. Numerous chloride cells were found on superficial regions of the gill filament epithelium, most likely serving to eliminate the excess of electrolytes while in seawater. The kidneys had numerous nephrons to make urine and retain electrolytes while in freshwater. Conclusions: these observations lead to the conclusions that juvenile goliath grouper have the ability to osmoregulate in freshwater and should be considered a marine euryhaline species. Such adaptability opens for consideration the possibility that goliath grouper could be successfully farmed in brackish water or even in freshwater.

Key words: chloride cells, conservation aquaculture, euryhaline, nephrons, salinity tolerance.

"Just a pretty small pond that is loaded with stunted CNBG and lots of tilapia. Something needs to reduce the Numbers of panfish in this particular little pond.

A big sea bass (giant grouper or what we used to call Jewfish back in the day before everything had to be politically correct) should do the trick.

Big CC, bluecat and flathead move over. There is a new top predator in town!!!! laugh

Bobby:

Small children and pets would be at risk swimming in a pond with a full sized Goliath!! Dang it, why do we have to have cold winters up here???

California Black Sea Bass - Stereolepis gigas 563.5 lbs over 7' long

Goliath Grouper/Jewfish - Epinephelus itajara 680lb, but supposed to grow to 790 pounds.
