Trout are a blast ice fishing due to them staying active. I also have fond memories as a kid standing around a fire on the ice staying warm waiting for a flag to pop up on our tip ups. Also seeing brook trout cruise just under the ice.

Once I set my tip up, and as i set it in the hole it kept tripping. I attributed it to the wind and was getting thoroougly annoyed until I realized I had a fish on!

This particular 35 acre gem clear lake in Massachusetts had a large zooplankton population the brook trout grazed on just below the ice. The zooplankton would come up into your ice hole. Large enough for the naked eye.

I've been fishing about a foot or so off the bottom, might have to try under the ice. You never know!
