How in your opinion is the way to pellet train SMB? I have never done this before and was going to try but have no idea on how to start?

Look for rigid plastic netting in rolls on the net . Lots of suppliers with all types, sizes and patterns.
Feed training predator fish starts as yoy fry (post swim up size)with small feed like krill or brine shrimp. Several threads here on the subject.

I just buy pellet trained SMB and keep them on pellets in a cage.

All fingerling and juvenile fish are pretty easy to grow to larger sizes in a cage if you first locate and buy pellet trained stocker fish. The fish will adapt pretty well to cage life and grow quickly if fed once or twice a day. Keep the cage bottom 1 to 2 ft off the pond bottom and keep the sides clean of filamentous algae by brushing the cage sides with a stiff bristle type of broom. When the fish stop feeding or slow their feeding look for a reason and it is usually that too much algae is on the cage walls. Some have success keeping algae off the cage walls by adding a few tilapia into the cage with the other fish.

A couple of other places also have some cheap options for wire cloth and wire mesh materials; I usually use one of the following 3 spots:
Grainger
Mcmaster Carr
