Gentlemen,

I'm still waiting for a response on the legality of the Talapia. I did find a IDNR link which I posted on another thread, which indicates we need a permit to stock talapia in Indiana. I could be wrong but I'm getting the impression the two individuals I contacted via email are reluctant to respond and potentially hoping I will give up. Wouldn't be the first time. But in all fairness maybe they are busy.

It could be they object to the stocking but can't refuse the permit. Or they are talking it over. I've been in that situation before too. They changed the rules on me once when I was getting an aquaculture permit to plant grass carp myself. Apparently they had a pow wow and decided that was a big no no, and denied my permit from then on. So I was back to paying more for a supplier with an aquaculture permit to deliver them, than the grass carp themselves. Of course I could circumvent that by keeping a few in a pond and selling a few.

What I find ridiculous about the fact that they feel more secure with only a dealer with an aquaculture permit planting the fish, and maintaining these dealers must make sure there is no way they can escape from your pond is, the dealers don't really care. The ones I got were delivered by a summer college student that wasn't interested in that at all. Go figure. I guess it looks good on paper. :rolleyes:

Bill I stock the 1/4 pounders 1st week of May last year. And started seeing them on bottom dead in about a foot of water around the 3rd week of November. Only about 6 floated to surface and they got to 2lb plus. The few that were dead in the shallows I watched decay away. A few of this years stock look to be albinos because they are really white and easy to spot in the water. This week has been chilly at nite but they seem to be doing fine, some of them feed in same group with the BG. I'm wondering how big these 1 pounders will get to by November. Since I only have FA don't really know what other plants they might eat. My buddy who has a 3/4 acre pond that gets duckweed is going to try them in his pond this year. Will keep posting the progress thru out the year.

In Missouri, tilapia are only OK (Legally) in closed systems. I wish we could try them here. The following is an email I received. It's so much legal jargon, but they can't ban fish in aquaria, even if it's a big aquarium. I have two 700 gallon tanks.

Nice to visit with you. Go to the link below for all Wildlife Code rules and
click on Chapter 9. Scroll down to 9.110 "General Prohibitions" and start
reading in section (3). As long as your system satisfies section (3),
subsection (E), paragraph 4 (i.e. a closed system), you can keep tilapia and
many other species of fish. There are a few species that cannot be possessed,
under any circumstances and these "prohibited species" are listed in Chapter 4
(snakehead fish and walking catfish). Here's the link to all the Wildlife Code
