I have just recently became a owner of 2 small ponds 1/4 acres and for the first time one has been identified as having Mesquito weed and the other with Duck weed. Was looking for a place to purchase these reccomended products(Sonar/Reward) or generic brand of products. Im in a hurry for they are taking over fast.

I live in the garland/dallas area and am haveing trouble finding products. If there is any easier or better solution all help would be appreciated.

Be prepared for "sticker shock" with Sonar. Also, it is generally recommended as an early season application because its effectivety takes about 90 days according to what Kelly has told me.

I've used Reward and had good success with it on various weeds in and around the pond. Use caution when killing weeds this time of the year...kill too much at a time and you may get the dreaded, feared DO crash.

Thanks Meadowlark for quick response. This is my fisrt post on hear and Im sure this topic has been well coverd.So I dont want to start it over again. Just one more quick question... how far does a gallon of reward go and if I rack and seine out most of it, will it continue to grow back. talking to the previous owner of the ponds they have never had this problem before. Is this a once a decade thing or a continued problem from now on. Is there any cheaper (experimental ) way of treating this, some old school remedy someone has tried with success in the past.

Cheapest price qoute so far is $125.00 a gal for reward. What is Diquat? another chemical, is cheaper. Remember these are fairly small ponds.

The very best advice I can give you is to contact Kelly Duffie...you can get his e-mail and/or phone number from the link I sent you. He is a straight shooter.

Reward goes a long ways...one gallon will treat a bunch. For example, a few weeks back I used 1/2 gallon of Reward to sucessfully treat pondweed in a 3.5 acre pond. I'm not familiar with "Mesquito weed ".

Have you tried grass carp? A couple of them in a small pond can be very effective on weeds. However, most fish suppliers in Texas will not sell them in the summer because of the heat and resulting stocking loss.

I'm not a proponent of using chemicals, in fact use them only as a last resort. I lost my grass carp this spring to escape over the spillway and have had to resort to chemicals to have a chance at fishing.

Did you build some kind of "carp fence"? I lost soem carp last fall and had weeds out of control this season. I used some Reward and bought more carp. I do not want to lose them this season.

Sounds like we had a very similar experience. I think I've solved the escaping grass carp problem with these fish gates, which are made of scrap stock panels.

What's the deal with pictures? Can't see the ones I just posted?

Im not to familiar with any weeds but a water sample was taken from both ponds and they called it mesquito fern in one pond that is stocked with channel cats and has really taken over. Its a red colored mess and my job today is to drag, rake or seine as much as I can out of it in fear of a fish die off. Will this work for long or am I wasteing my time and back ache. I seen the name Diquat somewhere on here is that a weed or weed killer?

Diquat is the chemical ingredient in Reward.

I have been dealing with Estes for years. The personnel at their local stores are both knowledgable and helpful. I would highly recommend them.

Well after work yesterday I decided I better not wait any longer. The fastest and safest method as of yesterday was to go SEINING. :rolleyes: Yes my back hurts today and no Im not finished yet but did make a good start. Got about 3/4 of it done and hope it doesnt grow back before this week-end and I can finish up. The wind had blown it up thick on one end of the pond which helped.

This is just 1 of the ponds we are going to have to tackle this week-end.The other has bad case of duckweed.
