looking for info on the use of clove oil to "sedate" fish..
after spending a little too long trying to catch tilapia in the swimming pool (i thought the crowding net would work, but it's definitely not a one man job!) i started looking for something that would make harvesting the fish a little easier.. and thought about sedation, and found some info about clove oil..
it looks fairly easy to use, but i really haven't found any info about how long it would take to "dissipate" if i used it in a pretty much closed system... i would shut the pump down when harvesting and drain as much water out of the pool as i could, into other tanks in the basement..
any experience with it?

Scott, I don't have a clue as to strength of clove oil or amount for application/gallon of water for sedating fish.
I know that clove oil Overton provides calms fish for handling and photographing with a couple of drops from an eyedropper in medium size Igloo live well. I can put them to sleep with 3 or 4 drops.

I have seen Todd stick his finger in a bottle of clove oil and swirl in a 5 gallon of water and it calms fish down quickly.
I would seek Todd's advice - he's busier than a one arm paper hanger right now... grin

You'll want to use these types as remote, as in, don't dump it in a closed system with other fish, but only use it on specific target fish in a contained environment. Like in a bucket or cooler.

i was thinking about using it when i harvest all the fish..
after pulling all the yp, bg, and tilapia i'd turn the pumps back on, circulate the water for a couple weeks and add new stock.. thinking about hsb, but i might stick with a yp/bg mix, i have 5 tilapia that hopefully will be breeders in my single tote system that i'll keep running

Well it's not accepted for use with food fish by FDA but that may just mean the expensive testing that has to be done hasn't been done.

Why can't you just drain the fish tank down? That's what I do.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
