Possibly, but in my opinion there could be other factors in play also.

Is the shoreline maintained the same on both ponds? (mowed or natural)
Does your buddy manage his pond for fish? Are the goals ( from a management viewpoint) the same for both ponds?

Remember also that crystal clear water means the fish might be able to see you just as well as you can see them.
