Pond Boss Forums POND CONSTRUCTION Creating habitat Railroad tie fence?

Anybody ever made one of these for structure. I can get old ties cheap and they wouldn't have the creosote still permeating from them. I attached an example picture.

Looks nice, but you can tell from the pic how hard it is to mow along that fence line.

Yea I'm thinking of putting a section of one of these in about ten foot of water in my new lake. Sort of like an artificial fence line for structure.

How can you be sure without testing? Seems a risky venture to me without documentation that they are no longer toxic.

bklem...refresh my memory does your "new lake" already have water in it or is it yet to fill?

To me if your pond has already filled you may find something easier to place.

Zep, lake is dry. Just finished it two weeks ago. I already have 13 trees/brush piles and several culverts in place. Have plans for 15 PVC trees plus a couple of rock piles. Just though the "fence" would be an added benefit.

Instar, good point, I would not be positive but these are VERY old.

RAH, I would use sacrete to hold them in place-at least that would be the plan!

That's good bklem. If ya can...post some pics. I think you are smart to not use the RR ties, neat idea, but probably best to not use them. The one thing I would change about my pond is to make the shorelines drop off quicker. It helps slow up some aquatic vegetation/algae that takes off in shallow water. What part of Texas are you in?

I'm in Deep South Texas. King ranch country. Here is a short video of what we have done so far. I'll also post a picture with my son in it so you have some idea of the size. Hmmm, where is the video? Couldn't get the video to load but here are some pictures. Lake is 1.8 surface acres with max depth of 18'.

Thanks bklem. Looks like it's going to be a beautiful body of water. Is that a sandy bottom? I wish I had your shore inclines. I'd throw a few more bolders in if you can, but I am no expert. Some of the others may chime in.

Clay bottom and sides but it is VERY sandy down there and the wind has blown some sand in the lake. Yea I plan on using the rock that is left over from the lodge to make some rock piles. There is actually quite a bit. I also have plans to put a load of pea gravel in the shallow ends.

Nice looking project! Lusk recommends 10-20% of your bow dedicated to structure - use it to concentrate your fish. Since I imagine you're going to establish a LMB/BG fishery, you want to spend some time working on dense cover [cedar trees are great] for your BG in shallow water [3-6'] so they can avoid some predation, suvive, spawn, and thrive. Would like to learn your stocking plan, and what are you establishing as a forage base. Crayfish, Golden Shiners, Tilapia, Threadfin Shad?

Cool....and dont forget if you are going to have a non-floating dock now's the time to pour the supports!

Tee, you are correct on lmb. I haven't gotten to the stocking part yet! Figured I'd concentrate on one thing at a time. I'll be asking for advice on that in the near future. I've got several shallow water mesquites in the 4-6' range right now but might add more.

Zep, the boss man said we will add a floating dock at a later date. This is a very good friend of mine's project. I am just the foreman/consultant/ranchhand guy! Pretty good gig!
