If I had a 5 acre pond and filamentous algae sparatically covered an estimated 1/2 acre would I apply the chemical at the dosage rate perscribed for 5 surface acres or would I apply 1/2 acres worth of chemicals directly to the algae?

Treat with the prescribed dosage for the infested area only, based on the estimated acre-feet of water within the infested areas.
Your question is a valid issue. In some cases, dosage-rates can be challenging - especially since the smaller the area being treated, the greater the likelihood for premature product dispersion; which presents a question of how to allow for or offset the rapid dispersion of product from the treatment area.
Overall, treatment technique may be just as important as the product's dosage. Thorough penetration of floating algae mats is very important, since topical "raindrop" applications may only provide marginal success.

Mike, it sound like you would benefit from talking to a commercial applicator on site. Dosage can also vary according to algae species and many others. I work in Wisconsin and Illinois, and I know there are many others that cover the southern states, Ohio, and Indiana. [email protected]
