Recent posts regarding catching pond fish on the fly makes me wonder if folks are realizing the advantages of fly tackle over UL spin rigs - or just fly fishermen enjoying their sport?

There are so many advantages of being able to cast a small fly or pellet on heavy leader/tippets without fear of breaking off and losing or killing fish by overplaying them on light tackle.
Best management tool ever for surveying population of feed trained fish.

Fly-fishing became very popular among what FireIsHot calls the Orvis �elitist� crowd ever since the movie �A River Runs through It�.
It�s not all that complicated � if you are a fisherman, you know how to �load� a fishing rod and have a feel for it � ask Al � he picked up a fly rod and was casting tight loops with good distance in one afternoon � now he casts a fly line better than I can � he�s good.

Yeah, he don�t got no Orvis vest but finds flip flops and shorts appropriate for pond fishing.. He�s fishing Lake Fork with a fly rod next week � hope they don�t kick him off the lake!

George, I just learned how to cast a fly-rod on Saturday and it's now all I want to use. After about an hour of tutorial by my cousin and some practice, I caught a BG on my first cast and followed with 7 more. It's now all I've been using and all I want to use each morning and evening when I go out to the pond to feed and fish! And although all I've caught is BG up to this point I have no idea what I'll do when a HSB jumps on! I still have much to learn, but that alone, I'm sure will be a learning experience!

I understand what you're saying about the advantages of fly-fishing in a pond and a great point, but on the same hand (as I too was influenced by "A river runs through it") I now look forward to the opportunity to fish that remote stream somewhere for trout.

My cousin's "teacher" was an avid fly-fisherman from Nebraska named Verl Berg who passed away about 15 years ago. During a fly-tying class they both attended Verl was asked why he enjoyed fly-fishing for trout so much. Verl replied, "it's not about the trout, it's about fishing where the trout live".

What a great statement about the sport of fishing. Catching one is the bonus!

I used to fly fish somewhat often during law school but hadn't picked up a fly rod in 20 years until the recent trip to the King Fisher Society.

The feel came back to me pretty quickly and, while I'm no George (or Al!), I got comfortable again and had a blast. I also caught a pound and a half BG - my first ever non-trout on a fly rig - and was blown away by how much fun it was. I will be adding a fly rod to my quiver sooner than later and will use it a lot at my farm!

There aren't a whole lot of Al's out there. And, that's not all bad.

I had always thought of fly-fishing as a way of catching trout, not any other species and especially not used in a farm-pond,,,, until joining PB!

My brother used to do quite abit of fly fishing... Not even sure if he still has any of the equipment... I do know that he just sent an antique rod to my moms cousin in Wisconsin.. I think he said it was his dads..
