Very cool! I've always wanted to hook into one of the rare shortnose or Atlantic sturgeon found in the Potomac River near where I live. No luck yet!

Hmm, now that the lake is becoming less toxic, I wonder if they are on the come-back? When I was a kid, you would not set a foot in Lake Erie 'lest it burn off.

Erie has been on a good comeback for 20+ years now.
I was in my early 20's in the early '90s when I caught my first steelhead there.

They've also made a great comeback in the St. Louis River that divides Minnesota and Wisconsin at the very western end of Lake Superior. St. Louis River Sturgeon Comeback I've never caught one, but when I was a kid I saw several in the local rivers feeding Lake Superior. They looked like submerged wooden fence posts going up river.

One of my favorite studies posted on-line related to sturgeon, this one being the Shortnose Sturgeon. I find it fascinating looking at the temps, DO levels and location where so many different species are caught while they are studying the shortnose sturgeon.

One guy snagged a Lake Sturgeon a few years ago out of the Grand River in Grand Rapids. He tossed it in the back of his truck. Everyone told him that he can't do that, I mean, there were a lot of people there! He just ignored every one and drove off.  According to a later news report. The guy turned himself in due to all the pictures being circulated by bystanders, and the bounty on his head. He got 30 days and a couple grand in fines, plus community service with the DNR. Yep, cell phones can take pretty good pictures and videos these days!
