Trying to correctly id res. Do res always have the red flick? I have caught some that are definitely res but others not sure. They were caught in a smb and res pond only(supposedly). I have some in my pond but sometimes can't tell between young bg or young res.

I have seen pics where I don't see the red flick and almost look like a bg.

What I have seen the body patterns and color is the biggest difference. I think spawning males tend to have the red ear. Dont confuse with a long ear though, as they have color too.

Check out some youtube videos. I have some pictures I need to get posted of a read ear also!!

Yep females have a more subtle orangish ear tab edge. Don't forget pumpkinseeds also have red edged ear tab.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Small BG and RES are hard to tell apart, the red ear tab on RES often doesn't show up until they are 2-3" long.

Here is a picture of RES next to GSF or HBG.

A small RES with a barely visibly red ear.

A small RES without the visible red ear.

Those redear are about all the size I can find around here to stock. I wish I could locate a lake to catch some so we could add some advanced size RES to a few ponds.

Thanks for the pics.
