Here is a local hatchery (local to me) which I just found out is for sale. This was taken from the commercial property multi-list:

'Be your own boss. Own your trout farm and supply sportsman's clubs and others in Pennsylvania. Flexible terms with down payment. Owner will consider partial exchange for real estate, partial financing and provide training. Price includes four out-buildings, stock, equipment, real estate, vehicles and training.Natural spring on site that generates 2,240 gallons of water per minute.'

Also found this:

Hatchery

Sounds like fun, eh?

Wow I'd kill for a spring like that but I'm sure it's out of my price range.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Cecil,
I don't know about this particular piece of property, but there are a lot of good year around cold springs in this part of the country. We've actually got an area a few miles north of our place that puts out ice all year long -- that's cold. Ice Mountain

(This is a picture from Ice Mountain. My pond -- and home -- is on that mountain you see at the horizon.)

Last Saturday night, my wife and I had the pleasure of visiting a trout research farm just down the road. It produces fabulous brookies, rainbows, and WV golden trout in raceways that have huge amounts of water flowing through from a spring that feeds the raceways directly.

So, if you ever decide you want out of Indiana, the area around Victor, Sunil, and me, has lots of areas with great flowing springs. I believe that the place where I buy my fish has 90 ponds. The ponds I could see when I was recently there, all were full of water.

We could use a good taxidermist out this way.

Ken

P.S. I've never seen any unmarked vans, with men wearing little tinfoil hats, checking out the water in our ditches. So, it is perfectly safe here.

Interesting! And thanks for the invite! I'm puzzled though. How does it form ice year around?

This is what one of the websites says about Ice Mountain, here in Hampshire County, WV

 Quote:
Ice Mountain Preserve
Ice Mountain
 Thomas Minney

Why You Should Visit
The primary feature of the preserve are the 60 small holes and openings at the base of a rock talus that accumulates and retains ice. Ice Mountain takes its name from an unusual geologic process that results in a natural refrigeration effectcold air flowing out of the holes throughout the year. Producing the phenomenon is the accumulation of ice inside the mountains talus, a sloping mass of debris at the foot of the mountain from former rock outcroppings above.

The system appears to work like an open-top supermarket freezer. Dense, cold air sinks deep into the talus forming ice masses inside it in the colder months. As the weather turns warm, cooled air from the ice masses makes its way through the talus and out the ground vents. Because the system is so efficient, the ice only melts gradually and remains in the talus all year, even in the dog days of summer. A group of boreal plants grow around the cold air vents. The preserve also has high sandstone cliffs affording views of the surrounding area. There is an annual Ice Mountain Festival each June, hosted by the local families in North River Mills in cooperation with The Nature Conservancy.

Wow intersting. I love geology and natural phenomenom. Would rather observe a lightning storm over fireworks anyday.

Interestingly, we are also surrounded by warm springs. Here is info about two of them. Berkeley Springs is about 25-30 miles north of us:

 Quote:
Berkeley Springs, a fountainhead of warm mineral waters frequented by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in the New World, are at the heart of a mountain spa community in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle. First noted as Medicine Springs in 1747 on a map drawn by Thomas Jefferson's father, the waters for many centuries have drawn visitors seeking health and relief from the stress of everyday life.

In 1776, George Washington's family and friends drew up a plat of 134 lots, named the streets, and incorporated The Town of Bath, invoking the muses of the renowned English spa. Yet the magic of the springs prevailed, and the town and surrounding area are known by their name -- Berkeley Springs.

The waters flow at a constant 74F from the base of Warm Springs Ridge. You may still drink freely and fill your jugs at Lord Fairfax's public tap, and wade in the ancient stone pools in the nation's smallest state park. The town has endured cycles of notoriety, fashion, war and modern progress, but remains the Country's First Spa, a quiet, friendly haven surrounded by West Virginia's splendid outdoors.
Interestingly, we've got another warm spring about 10 miles south of us. The "medicinal qualities" of the springs are due to lithium in the water. The owners of the property allow people to take water from the springs. I know one guy who tried the lithium water in his goldfish tank, hoping they would get happier. They all died.

 Quote:
The Capon Spring is one of eight known warm springs in West Virginia. It rises at the base of a huge vertical outcropping of Oriskany sandstone. The Spring located in Virginia until the state of West Virginia was formed in 1863, was one of the most popular springs in the Valley of Virginia and was believed to have health restoring powers. Its name is thought to be of Shawnee in origin, with spellings recorded as Cape-cape-pe-hon, Cacaphon, and Ca-ca-pa-on, meaning, healing waters, medicine waters, or waters that heal.

Very cool Catmandoo I've wanted to stop at berkeley springs for a good while now but when we drive by the park is normally closed. BTW have you ever stopped at the shawnee springs market in cross junction va? their pies are amazing and I don't think it's that far away from you! Every time we're down that way we at least get two for the neighbor and two for us.

Geese, this is an old thread.

I go past the Shawnee Springs market several times a week. They provide a great local service. Many friend's teens have worked there.

Sometime, when you are heading past there, give me a holler. I'm not far from there.
