Maybe someone out there might have an answer, but 99% of all the algae in my pond has disappeared over the past week. Up until the past week my pond has had some mats of FA on the surface, some days worse than others, but usually somewhere around 10% surface coverage, with plenty FA on submerged structure.

About 10 days ago I noticed the visibility went from 30 inches with secchi disk readings to over 48 inches. Then I noticed a gradual reduction in the amount of FA in the pond to where now there are no floating mats and there is very little on submerged structure. pH is 7.1 Alkalinity 39 ppm and DO 6 ppm 4 ft below surface.

The pond is 2 years old and I never applied any chemical or natural treatments for FA. I'm not complaining, the water is perfect for swimming now and due to the hot weather we've been having, we've been doing alot of it \:\) I am curious though as to what has happened. Any thoughts?

I have noticed the FA on my pond is more prevalent in late Spring and early Summer than it is later on. It seesm to peak each year before it gets hot enough to enjoy swimming in the pond. And it is common lots of places for heavy rains (we've had a few of those, eh?) to cause FA to sink/dissipate/disappear. Maybe both phenomena ganged up on your FA?

If you were averaging 10% coverage, that's not too bad compared to some ponds around here. I know of a few that are usually 80% + covered.

Thanks for the response Theo! You're probably right. I'm a newbie to this pond managing stuff, so I appreciate the input.

And by the way...
I'm not up on my Latin so what exactly does "Non carborundum illegitimatus!" mean??? That's been driving me NUTS!!! Are you saying that non-carbon life forms are illegitimate? \:\)
