If it was mine I also would wait.

As an experiment, When ice is safe enough to walk on try with a shovel to cut off any tops at ice level. Also if you can before freeze-up see if you can cut some of the plants off in a small area below the water level so ice freezes over the tops. Mark the spot and see how regrowth appears next spring.
