Howdy pondians!
As I was strolling around my 1/4 acre pond today I saw something a bit startling...
As I looked in the water I saw what APPEARED to be a cloud of blood, like a shark just chomped into a meal (no sharks in my pond!!). Upon closer observation this red "cloud" was pretty much all the way around the pond, starting at about 2 feet in (1-2 feet deep there). It's a dark red, almost maroon color.
Does anyone have an inkling as to what this might be?
BTW... I caught 3 shrimp out of there today, they're 3" long, right on track for October harvest!!

If is was a small plant (doesn't sound like it) the intruder may have been azolla.
Or (more likely) it may have been one of the various forms of algae that display a reddish coloration.
It is hard to say for sure without visuals.

I'll see if I can get it on a digital camera. The algae looks more like a cloud than anything.

Well, I don't think this is going to accomplish anything but here goes :
Nope.. that didn't work.. I'll have to try another way to show a picture!
The reddish stuff is like a cloud about a foot in from the waterline.

Tgal - Can you "catch" some of it in a mayonase or pint/quart jar? Let it settle and look at it to see if the are wiggling, jumping or swimming around. I want to eliminate th possibility of zooplankton. Some Daphnia will have sometimes have reddish pigment. If zooplankton they should each be about pin head sized.
