Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Raising Forage and Bait started a hatchery pond

WE just started a hatchery pond with threadfin around 200-300. The BG will go in this week about the same number, but I will add some brood stock adults in as well, shooting for 50. Its for nothing more than to feed bass in other lakes we have. We will have a feeder and I will have the water limed and fertilized. Is there anything special habitat wise we can do to get max yeild from these species.

Do you have any water quality numbers?

Are you using a feeder? What food are you using?

Do you aerate?

water no problem, off the back of a pumped gravel lake, always will be water. No need to aerate, will add lime, lake just done up the road from this one was 2.1 alk. Need 5 ton of lime per acre, this pond is less than that, yes on feeder.

Don't know if you will have success with Threadfins in such a small BOW. As for BG, I've heard 25 pairs per acre for a brood pond. Adult BG will eat YOY Threadfin and YOY BG.

If you aren't planning on aerating, and plan on pushing carrying capacity, you'll need a way to take dissolved O2 readings.

Do you have a Secchi disc? If not, buy/build one. You'll need it.

anyone had any luck with the liquid lime? Think we may try this to get the PH up to fertilize this BOW.

This bow is very muddy/silty. Can't be ideal for growing fish, not sure how to get that taken care of. The bottom is old silt off the pumping process I think. Any way to get this water to bloom with the water not being somewhat clear?
The water does seem to saty this way if we get nay intermediate rain at all.

Take a water sample and see if it settles out in the jar/jug by itself. If not, then you might need to consider Alum to treat for suspended particles. Just know your PH going in and be ready to handle PH drops by adding lime.

Take a look in the muddy water section for more info on treating with Alum or Gypsum.

10-4 will do. my guess is, it will settle, it has been clearer in the past just tkaing forever for it to clear back up for some reason.
I think we will have lime for a lake up the road maybe as early as next week, so we will try to add a little lime to it if we can.

Since they are open water swimmer/feeders, I thought you needed a decent bloom to support threadfin. Do you know if your 2-300 are doing well? Were you feeding them from day 1?
