I have a couple of "flower pots" that are probably about 35-45 gallons each. They are the kind used for selling moderate size nursery trees. I drilled a staggered series of 1-1/2 inch holes all around, between about six inches from both the top and bottom.
These size buckets usually get tossed by landscapers, and I've been able to get them for free.
I had some 4-inch schedule 40 PVC pipe pieces that were a few inches longer than the container height. I drilled a series of 3/8 inch holes in the pipe -- ranging from about six inches from the bottom to about eight inches below the top of the pot. I set the pipe vertically in the middle of the container and shoveled in 3-4 inches of small river rock (like 1-inch pea gravel) to hold the bottom of the pipe in place. The PVC pipe got filled with these same kind of stones to about six inches from the top of the pipe. Then I took a mixture that was approximately half compost and half sand. I added several shovelfuls of worm casting. I mixed this well, and filled the container, which is sitting in full sun on the pond dam.
I stuck 15 Quinault and 15 Ozark beauty plants into the holes in the planter. I don't pinch the blossoms or runners. The runners get directed to pint planters for next years crop.
I pour water from the pond into the pipe a few times a week. I've also add fertilizer to the pipe now and then.
