So Thursday my girlfriends daughter was fishing for bluegills with night crawlers, well she landed a 20lb grass carp. I brought it in gentle never took it out of the water the hook came out of its lip with ease. Today she was laying dead on the bottom. I have had them for four years and never caught one. Is it normal for them to die after being caught?

I've caught a few and never seen one die because of it.

The way I look at it is *stuff* happens. Maybe it was just it's time to go and hooking it had nothing to do with it.

Yeah not happy about it but the look on that 7 year olds face catching that GC was well worth it.

I have caught a couple of mine as well and they made it. They were not 20lbs though. Maybe it was already sick? Most Grass Carp I think are fairly hearty fish. So I thought anyway.

Cody, if you land them quickly and revive them they survive - if on light tackle, the big ones will fight until they die.

Maybe it was a different carp altogether. I too have caught mine a few times as I only have 2 in my pond and they still seem to be ok.

Now after this last summer they may be gone, but I will find out soon after I start feeding as they are like torpedoes.

No it's a grass carp, caught him on 12lb fire line . It is what it is guess I get to buy 3 to replace the big one. The water was cold and the others were sunning in the shallows

I meant it may have been one of your other Grass Carp you had not the one you caught, did not mean a common carp.

Either way I am sorry to hear about it.

If you need your vegetation controlled the newer ones should do a better job anyway.
