Hello and thanks for the privilege of joining this great forum. I own a farm in Southwest Mississippi (Amite County) and am currently in the planning stages of constructing a pond in a large draw in one of my pastures. My soil is "marginal" according to the local extension agent and on 4/19/13 I have a Geoprobe machine that will spend the day taking soil samples.

I am in the industrial construction business, so I know a little about soil, but by no means an expert. I will work with the geotech company performing the geoprobe sampling to determine if a pond is feasible and if so, to design the pond and determine what sort of soil manipulation is required. I have some clay strata, and some sandy loam strata, and some in between, and I'm hoping that I have enough clay, and that the sandy loam strata are shallow enough to use core trenches to cut off, etc.

My watershed is approximately 40 acres and I'd like to construction about a 5 acre pond. If anyone has any input to the above I'd appreciate letting me know, and I am also looking for a pond construction consultant to work with me on the design and construction. I've seen leaking ponds and know folks who own some, and I'd rather not have a pond than end up with one of these eyesores and money pits.

Thanks in advance,

Ronnie V

You might look into a fella named Mike Otto as a pond builder and consultant of sorts. He's part of the forum here, and they say he is the best.

Ronnie,

Yes, definitely talk to Mike Otto. He can be reached by calling the Pond Boss headquarters office (800-687-6075). He's usually out planning, fixing, or building a pond or lake somewhere. The office can tell you how best to contact him. Nobody knows pond and lake building better than Mike -- plus, he is just plain fun to talk to.

However, I'd wait to contact Mike until the soil samples are done.

Regards.
Ken
