One of my friends has been fishing at our place for a while. He never seems to be able to catch more than one catfish, so I offered him the opportunity to run a trotline. He put it out around noon yesterday and then took it up at 6pm. During the period they were taking in the line, one of their kids landed about a 1/2 pound GSF. Glad to see they are still healthy. We didn't fish once over the winter.

Nice catfish. I wish we had some where around here with the numbers and sizes of catfish like that.

They seem to vary by size. Did you do multiple stockings?
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

They seem to vary by size. Did you do multiple stockings? First stocking was three years ago. We stocked one other time a year later. We suspect they are spawning... They were caught using cheapo TV brand bait shrimp.

Growth rates vary greatly amongst different fish of the same age class. With two different stockings, I could easily see them having that variance in sizes.

OK. I don't know what I was thinking but I set out 20 more hooks today at lunch time. My wife said she was going to invite another couple over for dinner. Just a few minutes ago, I stepped out and pulled on the trotline to see if I had any customers. It won't budge. I tried to tug on it a little bit. It tried to tug me in the water. I'm scared to go out in the boat and check that trotline. If it is anything like the previous time, I will be testing out my new electric filet knife in a little bit.

Get those dinner guests to help pull that out of the water.

Remember to take pics! Hope you don't have 20 like this one, or you'll be really, really busy.

Imagine my surprise! Fat man in a little boat (to give you an idea of scale): Just shy of 12.5#: Eat me! Now here's the kicker.... We didn't stock any flatheads... Or as the locals would say "Ops" (Opelousas.)

I had a tough time cleaning him. I normally use the electric knife, easy-filet method. Didn't work too well on him. He needed a set of good knives to pick all the meat off his rather substantial bone structure.

He was probably on his way to 30 lbs.
