For those of you who partake in that fire water, what you you like for an every day drink? Special occasion drink?

For me (and even the wife), we enjoy Makers Mark, Gentleman Jack, JD Single Barrel. The wife really enjoys Costco's Kirkland Bourbon. We Googled it and found out its re-labeled Jim Beam, only its 107 proof! Not into much Scotch, with the exception of The Balvinie. Love the hint of honey. Canadian whiskys are not too popular with us, except for Crown Royal's Cask 16. At $70/bottle, it only comes out on rare occasions. Woodford Reserve seems to be a winner as well.

Anyone enjoy those "untaxed" spirits? I know I do.

Bulleitt bourbon is in the sweet spot for me in terms of price/taste. You really should try it and it's actually cheaper than Maker's and I like it better. They also make a rye whiskey which is pretty good, too.

For scotch I like the Scottish single malts, Glenmorangie especially.

I used to drink JD until a friend introduced me to Crown Royal; that is he only whisky I drink now.

I don't drink scotch very often anymore, but I always enjoyed Glenlivet. Have only tried the 12. Maker's Mark is good stuff and I just realized, I don't think I've ever tried Crown Royal.

Blantons, Basil Hayden, Woodford Reserve, (in that order). Pappy VanWinkle 23 year old when someone else buys it for me.

Whisky is mighty risky...
Wine is mighty fine...

I'll drink to that.

My wife always buys me a bottle for my birthday every year. Just one of the long list of reasons why I have and will always love that very special women. (I mean it honey...sometimes she too reads the PondBoss forum )

Chivas Regal Royal Salute, 50 years old.

Bacardi and Diet Rite for my "normal" cocktail, but Dewars White Label on the rocks is a favorite with a good steak!

Or with anything grilled for that matter!



But I now feel like I lead a sheltered life as I'm 50 and enjoy a good cocktail (let alone the trials of my youth) but a lot of what you all have mentioned I've never even heard of!

My neighbor (a bartender) gave me 3 oz.'s of Louie the 13th! I very much appreciated the gesture, but my low end pallet could'nt appreciate such a high end spirit.

Scotch- Famous Grouse

Whiskey- Crown Royal. If you don't like the smoothness of just plain Crown Royal, try Crown Royal Black.

bourbon- Knob Creek

scotch- Johnnie Walker Black

This post was so good I had to break out the pappy van winkle 23 that was given to me for Christmas.

Vodka. (50 million Russians can't be wrong) There are a lot of good ones, but my favorites are Reyka, Level, Chopin, Kettle One, and for a little bite Stolichnaya. Ultralight on the vermouth, or sweetened lime juice. Most bartenders are way to heavy handed when it comes to mixing a martini or gimlet. I use cheap vodka in Bloody Mary's, the mix kills any quality vodka.

Never had it. I was joking. How was it? $10000 a bottle.

It was a small bottle, maybe 375 ml. My mother-in-law gave it to me. This was before I got into drinking distilled spirits so I gave several bottles including the Royal Salute to a friend. He figured out I didn't realize what I had and promptly returned it to me. As I remember, it was good, not $10K good mind you! Mine was probably the 21 yr old stuff anyways.

Agree with the Pappy Van Winkle. Asked a liquor store owner about it once and he told me they have to sell a certain number of cases of a lesser bourbon made by the same distiller (or possibly distributor) to even be eligible to get one bottle of the Pappy in. Finest bourbon to pass my lips so far.

Angels Envy is quite good. Not as expensive as Pappy, but not cheap either.

Drink Old Forrester on a regular basis, like the citrus overtones in it. Have heard it is a staple on many tastings on the Bourbon Trail. It is one of the less expensive bourbons and one of the oldest brands.

Jack Daniels and Jim Beam are old friends from my college days and I occasionally visit them, especially at deer camp.

Have attempted to build a taste for scotch and have tried several at some tastings at Scottish gatherings and games, but just don't care for it that much, I'm afraid. (don't tell my clan, or they will make me wear my kilt upside down.)

I prefer expensive tequila but only in a margarita. If I can afford it, the stuff probably isn't much good.

#2. The Paloma (Spanish for "dove") is a tequila/Squirt drink.
May not sound too good, but it's delicious on a hot summer day.
I was surrprised to hear the paloma is the "most popular tequila-based cocktail in Mexico".

I've heard you can add salt to the rim too.
It's tough to ever order a paloma here in the US
because most bars/restaurants don't have Squirt.

OK, I'll get some squirt.

Just thinking about it. When on a diet, tequila is OK but all of the different mixes like triple sec are high carbs. Need to look at squirt. I'm about to embark on another low/no carb diet and could stand to lower my cholesterol.

I know...lol...but it's pretty tasty.

Dave are you familiar with "Wheat Belly"?

It is a low carb related diet.

I've tried it, but since wheat is practically in
everything it is very tough.

Mark, I'm going to go through 2 weeks of no carbs, sugars, etc. Just protein for 2 weeks. Then, add some carbs back. I did it once before and lost 25 pounds. I have now gained 7 of them back. Funny how Brahms ice cream can pack on weight.

My wife is going to do weight watchers. She's done that successfully before.

It ought to be "interesting".

The funny thing about Scotch Whisky is the more you taste the more you want! There a lot of differences between the distilleries.

For an inexpensive somewhat fruity drink Lismore is a good selection that I really like, it has a bit of an apple taste. A little raw, but for the price (about $22 to 25 / bottle) it is very drinkable.

Cardhu and Royal Lochnagar are two of smoothest drinks that you will every find. Very easy on the palate.

Talisker has some real character to it. Close your eyes and take a healthy drink, it almost transports you to an old sail ship, you can taste the salt and tar. The taste lingers in your mouth for awhile. Robert Louis Stevenson said this was the drink of kings.

Highland Park is everything that good Scotch Whisky should be. Smokey -Yes, Peat - just a hint, Smooth - oh yes - some character - yes, but not overpowering. The taste stays with you for bit.

But my favorite is Aberlour 18 year old. Toffee and butterscotch in favor. Slightly smokey, no peat taste, very smooth with no after bite.

I like all the single malt Scotch whiskies, but my real favorite is the next one.
