My pond is 50 degeres right now almost perfect for trout. the hogs are definatly eating well.
My trout pond water is in the thirties (No need to crank up the well yet) and I feed the brooks every few days.
They would eat every day if i fed them but in such low water temps it would be a waste of feed. Cecil, why do you say that?
Because of the low temps metabolism isn't very high but they still exinctively eat more than they need and growth is not significant in low water temps. So the feed can be wasted. Some texts even say trout are just at maintenance below 38 F.
There's actually a possibility the trout may fill themselves up with pellets that are dry and digest slowly due to the low water temps, and have issues like pressure on their swim bladders or other problems.
