Ken and Mark, water temp. here is 57. JKB,you should drop what you are doing and become a lawyer. Pond is a sand pit that varies from 11-13 ft. but is 47" low now. Looks like another one of my grand ideas is not going to fly.

Two ponds, 13 and 15 acres on the Mattaponi River.

Now I know my brain is half-fast! I didn't realize you were referring to how my neighbors use of copper tubing and wood heat! grin

That may not warm up the water, but it might keep it from freezing.

Unfortunately, what comes out of those copper pipes is what I use to instantly euthanize fish so I can send them off for a fish necroscopy (fish autopsy) -- even if they aren't sick!

Yeesh. This whole thread all leads to what we do to fish when we treat them like college students.

We make them drink too much so they will throw up. After we figure out what they had for dinner, we give them way too much booze, and they die from alcohol poisoning. Then we send them off to the coroner, who figures out what made them the way they were! crazy

There was a YP farm up here that was getting discharge water from a nuclear power plant. Kept things nice and warm, all winter. Can't remember how many acres, but it was substantial. One day, the discharge water was overdosed with lethal levels of chlorine. Everything was killed and the residual chlorine made the ponds unusable. Lengthy, multimillion $ lawsuit followed. Power company won, of course.

If you go downtown Grand Haven, MI. The streets and sidewalks are all heated with discharge water from the local power plant.

I went downtown last week to get my new insurance papers. Coming out of the snow covered streets, I thought I was seeing a mirage. No snow anywhere. The sidewalks and streets were warm, and fairly dry. A block away, ya practically needed 4WD!

Yep Ken, many BTU's are required.

I run an artesian well into one small corner of the pond, the water comes out hear right about 72 degress. I do this to try to provide a small corner of the pond with a warm water refuge incase we get the occational harsh hard freeze we get in North FLorida. The tilapia and couple others in the pond can be a little sensitive to colder water during these times. the goal is to just have one small corner stay above or near 50 for the short duration we might get a hard freeze.
