I just had the dog out for a walk and from the sounds of it the yotes are back and got a few of the turkeys we recently had return after a 20 year absence It's been a year or so since I heard them but god that is a scary go grab your gun sound.

Anyways I was out of the country when you had to apply for a permit to harvest but with several pets and a young daughter I'm open to suggestions to deter them.

Most people around here use a Great White Pyrenees. They do a good job but probably not feasible in NJ. Maybe poison but then you run into other risks.

We also have more numbers than we have seen in a long time.

NJ has a lot of goofy laws, to include needing a special permit to kill coyotes.

They have a forum, and you might be able to find someone in the area locally that hunts them. I know guys here who hunt 'yotes are always looking for places to hunt.

You can get a couple of them but never really eliminate them. They are survivors.. I have often said that if life on earth ends, there will be 2 exceptions. That's the coyote and the cockroach.

I've never worried about them. I hear them but rarely see one. I feel that they are the only thing that keeps Texas from being totally over run with pigs.

Trapping is more effective than shooting, (traps work 24/7) but the trapper has to know what they are doing or all they are doing is educating the coyotes.

Jludwig,my property is the exception to the rule for nj,my house sits on a acre but we are surrounded by a 80 acre preserve,campground and my 35 acre pond/property yet still minutes from urban areas.

Chances are in the near future I'll be getting a karakachan (not sure of the spelling in english) from Bulgaria when the time is right.They are similar too the great white pyrenees and are not afraid of a wolf let alone a 35 lb yote.Just not a option at this time.

CJ,you can say that again.

Due to my location in a preserved area I have a VERY good working relationship with our local fish and game warden.He has so many places to cover that are scattered about a large area he rarely shows unless I alert him of a problem.............and if he does show up chances are if my car is in the drive he'll knock first.I'd call him but I already know what he'll say to do just wanted to see if there was anything else out there.

Dave I've heard the yelps and saw their beady eyes on my property line less than 15 ft away the last time they where a issue.They had found our chickens and would pick a few off every now and then mere feet from my back door.I was more scared of them than a run in with a mama bear and a cub I had in the mountains.

this was my initial thought,and we used to let a trapper use the land but he has since passed.Considering the one field is where we train our bird dogs,trapping just isnt a viable option.

Brettski,they are getting pretty bold these days thats for sure.

When I get a chance I'm going to talk to the campground owner as they live there onsite.He's a sportsman and usually keeps guinea hens around for tick control,I'm sure we'll come up with something.He was a big help with other issues in the past and I cant imagine yelping yotes would be good for his business.

I hope he pens up the guineas at night or they will disappear quickly due to coyotes.

But the good thing is that I take great joy - and not a small jolt from adrenaline - from practicing retaliation with the most extreme form of prejudice against snakes!
