It's snowing to beat hell here and has been for the past hour. Weather forecast shows "snow showers."

Maybe ol' man winter is making up for the overblow forecast here last time around?

I bet that tilapia was in the first stage of permanent winter hibernation. If you could man catch it then the icy grip was about to put it to sleep.

It looked like some of the ones that I snagged.

I'd bet that the marks are from a GBH or something like that if they were on the top side of the fish and on both sides.

George, I thought retirees had all the time in the world to get things done since they aren't spending time at a real job!

Interesting, a Heron does live in the area, so do a few water turkeys. The Heron is welcome, but the water turkeys are discouraged from hanging around.

I am looking to see if the Tilapia survive the winter in our pond. With the spring water and the deep warmer waters, it is going to be interesting to see if they survive.

ROFLOL !!! I have seen a lot of crazy things on a game cam but never a giant big old stalking GBH. My gosh it is taller than your deer feeder and your dam. Dang thing must have a 6 foot beak. --

Cecil, we got maybe 3/4" of snow this morning. Big flakes coming lazily down. It's stopped now. Temps are just below freezing, but with the snow cover, I don't see the ponds thawing anytime soon.

I'm still cleaning up my office since we had our massive weather event. At least 1" of snow here, and that brings Dallas to a standstill.

Look what I found buried under years of crap.



I think all the players listed inside are still around, so ponds must be good for you.

Hmm, finally back online. DSL modem died at the start of Christmas break. We wound up with 15" here! Pretty excited as it is sticking around too. The ski slope we can see from here is pretty active for a change.

This morning we had a few large snowflakes here for about 30 minutes. OKC had an 1" of snow.

Drove through some countryside today and 10 miles north, I do not think they got as much as snow as all of it is completely gone.

I hear a plow truck outside! Come on man, I can look at it funny and it will melt

Heck, the darn skid shoes on the plow trucks are moving more snow than the plow

Well, got another surprise 6" today on top of the other snow. Getting pretty darned hard to walk the dog! Up over my knees, and my dog isn't all that big :-<

Pretty hard to predict the weather lately. If this were a normal year, we would have some significant accumulation. As it stands right now, the sun (that wasn't supposed to work today) melted pretty much all we had, except for snow directly on the north side of buildings.

We also got another 5 inches of snow on top of the 9 1/2. It seem like the pond fills faster with snow then summer rain. Maybe because there might be less evaporation in winter and perhaps the snow in the high winds coming over the trees around my pond may have dumped the snow into the pond like a snow fence. What ever the reason I may reach my normal high water by spring after the bad drought.

You get more water in the pond in the winter since a lot of the ground may be partially frozen. It cannot perc down as easily into the soil. Also much much lower evaporation rates.

If the ground ever freezes. I haven't seen frozen ground up here in many years.

Here the top 1" is frozen now.

We've got a 40-foot wide icicle/avalance-in-waiting!







Last year we got a 10-inch snow in late October before we put the deck furniture away. A similar avalance crushed the furniture when the avalance came sliding off.

At one time we had "snow angels" mounted on our "standing seam" steel roof to keep this from happening, but the avalances have slowly ripped them all off the seams -- leaving gaping holes we've patched with flashing and caulking.

We don't use the front entrance this time of year.
