Anyone have experience with PCE??

I have low levels of it in a well on a new property. I'm being overly cautious, as they're basically just below the EPA level for drinking water - but that's still too high for me. It's in a superfund area so we've got years of data, and the cleanup is working and lowering it.

I'm trying to figure out optimal ways to reduce through aeration before entering a new pond. Probably going to run through a stream rock bed before entering a wetland with heavy aeration. Trial and error and testing is the plan, but wanted to see if anyone had experience with it.

Obviously want to keep the PCE down for fish health and longevity and food.

p.s. hi old friends.

Hey Aaron, good to see your post but not about contaminants. I think I would contact Kelly Duffie.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I have experience with perc in my line of work, but not in this capacity. I'm going to ask around though.

Ok, the general consensus is aeration and you're already planning on that, so that's a solid start. A link was shared with me that might help. http://tosc.oregonstate.edu/workingwith/pce8-17-01.pdf

Not sure if that gets you anywhere, but if I find anything else out, I'll add to it.

hi everyone.. thanks for the warm welcome back...

thanks for the links eric, omaha, and bill.. ... i checked them out. i think i'm going to be okay.. i'll get some testing done and get results up in case others have the issues.. i think aeration and a wetland will solve the pce problem as it looks as though it's relatively degradable.. someone brilliant once said to move water to clean it, so yeah..

it's also probably not as big a problem as it sounds, but i just happen to be aware of it because it's in a superfund area..

re: my fish. they've been in a holding pond for a year.. long story but my pond went away with my old house.. couldn't let my fish go, so basically dug a hole at a friends house and shoved them all in a swimming pool size hole to keep them for the last year or so.. pretty interesting to have 100+ 2.5-3lb bg's in something like that.. (i have good friends to help out)

now i'm trying to reboot with a new pond in a new place.. i think i lost most of the smallies this year when we had 115 degree heat and a well issue, but have quite a bit of my bg broad stock in various year classes.. i will know more about how they're doing in a few weeks, as they haven't been "pampered" in quite the same way i've treated them in the past, and i haven't touched them so i don't know health and conditions..

it's nice to be thinking of the fish again.. and nice to be back among old friends.

You have SMB a short road trip away - say the word, would be my pleasure!

I'll come visit.

I'll drink the water and see what happens. It may take a few years to get results. smile

Careful, Bruce.
Having grown up in Tucson, I can tell you that drinking the water can lead to Matos-zona's Revenge, which is occasionally fatal to tourists visiting from the Midwest.

I'd guess that takes less than a few years to diagnose.
