Ken do you watch "Alaska, the last frontier"? You'd be a natural replacement for Otto if he ever blows himself up, gets crushed by tractor etc...
Does anyone else watch it???

Nope - phoniest reality show ever - turned it off as soon as I saw milk cows and wild horses - give me a break!

I'm not sure what it was about the show, but I only watched one episode.

I did enjoy the short series they did on mountain men. And, I get a kick out of the Moonshiner series. I felt like the people in all those series were like old friends.

Other than that, about all I ever watch are new episodes by Andrew Zimmern (Bizzare Foods), Hee Haw, and I try to pick out Bing's bald spot on Larry's Country Diner.

George, you're probably right, but sometimes it's entertaining. They do catch some nice fish now and then...

Ken, you almost slipped that one by me. We are going back to Nashville on December 3 and 4 to watch the tapings of the January and February shows.

FYI, I really did not know that bald spot was there until the camera panned over me from behind!!!

Randy, I betcha Ken enjoys the Alaska Gold Rush show with all the heavy equipment and real mining operation - they don't fake anything except the dramatics to keep things intresting.
I like heavy equipment - never knew anything about mining but but logistics are overwhelming in that part of the country.

Travis, Alaska has to be experienced rather than explained..
Except around Anchorage and maybe a few other spots there is nothing but remote wilderness, accessable only by boat, barge or air- with extreme weather conditions.

Areas such as the reality TV Gold Rush show are old mining claim areas resurrected by current gold prices.

I'd definitely like to visit and hunt it some day.

Travis you need to go on a real bear hunt - I haven't hunted them but seen a brown one darted and netted and hauled by chopper back to the mountains...

Travis, this particular trip to Alaska in the early 70�s could have made a genuine reality show.
I was there strictly as an observer � my group was at a remote base camp on the Aleutian Peninsula, responsible for quality control of seismic digital data acquisition and processing, while employed by a major O&G company.

I need to have my old slides digitized but would be expensive.

It was a helicopter operation so as to leave no �footprint� on the tundra � supported by fixed wing aircraft, single rotor chopper and twin rotor Sikorsky helicopters.

I was lucky enough to have a floatplane available for my use as well as a chopper that allowed me to fish a remote river. We explored killer whales, a volcano and many glaciers � part of my job � someone had to do it.

Talking about "reality shows", I almost hate to ask what you think about Duck Dynasty, but I will...

George, it really is pretty good. You can jump right in anytime and figure out the "plot" - which doesn't exist. Just a bunch of rich rednecks trying to run a business, but mostly just doing crazy stuff.

Just a personal thought, but I believe that most of the "reality" shows that are on today are at least 50% (or more) "made for TV".

My biggest question is how much do the people get paid? I think that shows like The Duck Commanders are purely made for TV (Do I think that all the duck calls are only made by those guys on TV? - NO!) get more $$ than shows like Alaskan Frontier or some of the others.

I have nothing to go on other than personal belief, but I think the Deadliest Catch is the least scripted show of the ones that I've seen.

There�s no question about the Gold Rush show being made for TV - they don�t try to hide it. They have made one segment showing meeting with producers and another with TV cameramen and support crew slipping and sliding in the mud�it�s a big money production but real operation.

I enjoy observing the geology - I know nothing about hard rock geology - bedrock - �pay dirt� - overburden - depositional ecosystem - you can�t fake this stuff�

Scott, I agree that they are mostly scripted - there is no way those goobers on DD
could be running a profitable business and doing the crazy things that take them away for the business every day. But for me, it sure beats watching the news.
