Then again if you pay more per out for larger equipment you may actually save some money in the long run if the time is significantly reduced.

Yes it is.
The answer is it all depends on far you are moving dirt to the site and how much needs to be dug. Yes. Just think of it this way, a 12 yard scraper moves 1.5 times the dirt of a 8 yard scraper. So in two trips with the 12 yard one, you have what would take three trip with the 8 yard. That adds up over the course of a day.
