I've not had a great deal of success growing them out in cages, but that may just be me. As mine have gotten into the 5 to 7 inch size they have developed sores which would eventually kill them. I believe it was from them stabbing each other. I've tried it twice in my 3x3x4 foot cage. However, releasing them at that size seems to have been successful. But, I don't have many bass over 16 inches.
