I came across this little fishing analog temperature and oxygen meter(click here) and was wanting to know if anybody has ever used one. I'm thinking about using it in my pond to see how well I'm aerating.

Don't buy it! The temperature aspect is O.K. but it really doesn't measure D.O. It calibrates the amount of D.O. that should be present at saturation at that temperature -- not real time D.O. It's deceptive.

To get real D.O. measurements you need to spend at least $250.00.

I use something similar to that but has temp and visibility. Works great for measuring temps at various depths. The visibility? don't really know my pond is extremely clear so the visibility is always great. I really like the fact that it has such a long wire for the probe.

MF - Cecil is also correct on this one. Note in the picture the meter indicates the amount of oxygen and temperature at the same time with only one "needle" reading. Meter is indicating or guessing/estimating amount of oxygen based on temp reading. I have one of these "machines" and it is basically just a temp probe. There electronic temperature meters out now that give digital readout. Airguide makes one for $20 that has a 23 ft probe wire and uses AA battery. It is built for use on fish on fishing boats and accuracy is pretty good. Marinas and Cabelas carry them.

I found the Minn Kota Water Temp Sensor through Cabela's. Now I just have to come up with a few other things to get. I hate paying shipping for one item.

Muddy - If you check around in some nearby boat marinas, they often carry in stock or can get the identical item for you minus shipping costs. Ask them for Minn Kota or Airguide brands of the TempSensor; both are identical except for nameplate.

Well I went ahead and bought this $60 TEMPERERATURE/DEPT SENSOR click here . It's a lot more then the other, but I figure that I can cast it easily from the bank all the way around my pond and get every reading I'd need in four or five casts to start making a detailed pond log. I can also find out exactly when my pond is starting to turnover/stratification in the spring.

Before I bought it I did some researching and what I found is that it works great for fishing for trout, walleye, and other cold water fish. It records the temperature readings every 5' so you don't have to worry about picking up false readings when you're bringing it through shallower water, out of the water, and in your hand. You might not think it could, but some cool water fishing people do.
I will also be casting out to deeper water so when I'm reeling it back in it'll spend some time on the surface. I could get in my boat and row around dipping a thermometer in the water at different deeps and spend a lot of time, but save $40.
Since you've used the item in 12�of water when you bring it up does it give 1, 2, or 3 readings?

That's one of the things that disappointed me about the unit. I kept dropping it in 20 feet of water and it kept telling me the max depth was 12 feet and gave temp readings at 12, 7 and surface...maybe I should give it another try. Maybe I ditched it too quickly and should try it again now that temps are up. Good luck with yours!

Did you call the manufacture? $60 is a lot to spend on something that won't read like it's suppose to. I'll post how mine does and let us know how yours does if you use it again.
