I swear I have one in my pond. (I know "pictures")! He sticks out like sore thumb and is way darker than the CC's. I want to catch him but I think he is blind in one eye. He always cocks his head to the left side when I feed. But he is always the first one at the dock when I feed.
Are these rare or just a super dark male? If I name him, he's a pet and off limits to anyone who fishes here. I can't believe I might name a fish.

A fish's eyesight is linked to its chromophores which give it color. Blind or partially blind fish are usually very dark almost pitch black.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

There can be other causes too though. A very dark fish can also indicate some form of disease but typically it's what I referred to above. Many times eye flukes are the culprit.

Many highly acidic waters cause BG to be extremely dark as well.

Good point CJ. When I fish for bluegills in Massachusetts where the PH's are on the acidic side when you catch them they turn pitch black if you put them in a live box. It must be a combination of the PH and stress.

Thanks Cecil, I've never heard of this before but you've described him perfectly. He is the only "black gill" in my pond and now I find out he is handicapped. But thats cool though because he is now off limits for anyone fishing my pond. As you know, I'm a sucker for stuff like this but I love it. I'm going to look up "chromophores" next.

^^^ Cecil, I like your basic answer the best. ^^^ I started reading up on chromophores and thought I was reading a script from the "Big Bang Theory" T.V. show.  . Thanks for your reply.... I've got a lot to learn  .

Hang__Loose, Apparently you're a softy like me. I have a really hard time discarding the fish with defects or poor performers. It just doesn't seem right throwing them up on the bank.
