Pond Boss Forums POND CONSTRUCTION Creating habitat Floating Dock Habitat?

I was thinking about attaching vinyl streamers to the bottom of my plastic floats when I build my floating dock. If I found a way to attach them, would they drape down or float? I'm trying to create hiding places for small fish. Good or bad idea?

Also, will BN or FHM's utilize the flat bottom on the floats to lay eggs?

Not sure what you mean by a streamer but UV rays attack flimsy plastics. Not sure they would hold up.

Fatheads prefer/inhabit shallow water. I think I would use pallets, rocks or logs close to shore and under the walkway or under the floats close to the bank. They will certainly graze on the moss and insect life that collects on the bottom of the floats.

PVC sinks like a rock.

Unless it's foam core PVC pipe. Toss a 3" dia piece in a pond and see what it does.

Loretta you might consider using artificial garland if you can find it this time of year, I bought mine after Christmas at a Dollar Tree store, it was real cheap then.
It is holding up well after more than 3 years on my small artificial island, and it attracts many insects and small fish.

Yes!!! Now that's what I had in mind. What a great idea. So small fish and minnows would use this under my dock even though the dock will be about 24' (farthest) from shore? I was thinking the dock itself would help block UV rays but I wonder if garland comes UV protected.

Thank you for the idea. We built the gangway this summer and the deck is scheduled for next summer so I have plenty of time to look for some garland.

Another dock idea. Get a piece of 4 inch PVC and cap off what will be the bottom end. Drill a couple of holes in lower part of the pipe. Wire it or attach in some way to the dock. Fill with fish feed and put a cap or can or ? on top. The feed will get mushy and small fish will suck the wet goo out of the holes. Predators will certainly hang around.
