I am planning on adding a fountain for my 1.5 acre pond (max depth ~8 ft). My primary goal is for asthetics with aeration being secondary. I already have two 1 HP Gould well pumps. What I would like to do is purchase a 3 tier fountain head and make my own floating fountain. I was planning on setting the intake for the pump in deeper water about 150 ft from the fountain head. I would appreciate any constructive comments or criticisms.

Sarchasm, Be forwarned the following is only my opinion. I intend to do something similar in my pond only using waterfalls instead of a fountain. Only one of the falls will be readily visible & I will dress it up a bit but their main purposes will be to induce trout to spawn & provide areation for the eggs. However I intend to pull water from the deepest part of the pond & pump to the falls. It is my belief this will improve oxygen levels in the deepest water & help cool the water in the summer. I can build the falls for maximum air contact which should provide some areation. Most of the guys in the know aren't going to comment on an experimental system such as you have in mind on an open forum. They know the ins & outs of the systems they work with & I'm sure have enough to deal with without adding something off the wall. That's not to say no-one is intrested. My advise: Make it. Apply it. Take some very good readings & post results here. That's what I intend to do. I think your idea will work. But as I said it's just my opinion.

My concern would be how efficient these pumps would be and therefore your electric bill. Sometimes using something that is not designed for the purpose can be fraught with negatives. I pump my well 24/7 in summer for my trout pond and it's a 1 1/2 hp pump. It costs me about $100.00 per month in electricity. Fortunately I more than make up for that by selling the trout.
As far as the falls and pumping water out of the deepwater of the pondm I would be concerned that you will end up warming the pond in summer too much and have too warm of water for the trout. I also don't think you will get much survial with their natural reproduction and what does hatch will probably be eaten but thier own parental stock. But I could be wrong. Not trying to be negative. Both of you let us know how this works out.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Thanks Cecil, Your input is always very welcome. I posted it in an earlier post but didn't go into detail again this time. I plan on pulling water off the top in the summer & cooling it with the falls. I know it may or may not work but am going to try. So far as electricity goes I'm hoping to add a waterwheel after I can determine how much volume of overflow I have to operate the pump. I'm hoping to have enough survivors only so as not to have to restock. I do plan on posting results. Esp. on the waterwheel aplication. I think that you could use that if it works.

Ric,
Are you assuming that you will get sufficient cooling from evaporation from the falls? I would not think this would be very substantial. Do you have any data to show how much cooling you could get? I would find that interesting.

Cecil, I'll be locating the falls on the north side of a hill where they will constantly be in the shade and set back into the hill to take advantage of the cooler earth. There will be some experimenting and night operation may be the best for cooling. I do know if properly done and there's enough airflow, the best I could expect is 10 deg. drop in water temp. It will vary depending on relative humidity & how much wind we have. I'm planning on 3 waterfalls for now.
