Daniel, the junk from the bottom will probably not be of the quality to build the dam. Find a source for a sandy loam mix of about 50% clay.

There are a couple of problems with 100% clay for a dam. The first is that grass has a really tough time growing in clay. The second is that clay cracks when moisture recedes during summers and dry spells.
