I'm looking for some good basic guidance for gravel road construction.
Its time to improve the 1300 foot drive through the pasture. Last time we simply winged it, but I've got more time for planning on this one.
Any brochures available online or helpful primers? Thanks!

I've been maintaining, and sometimes building, gravel driveways for about 50 years. Our current homestead has over a half mile of gravel driveways.

I'd suggest you find a good local excavating company. Talk to them. They will know your local dirt. They will know what local gravel is available. Unless you have your own dump truck, it is best to work through a local excavating company for getting stone and gravel delivered.

As for guides, here is a pretty good one. It takes a bit to download, but it is worth it.

Gravel Roads

A good base, a good crown with good ditches and drainage, including culverts, will provide you with a driveway you can easily maintain for years with a just utility tractor and a blade and/or rake, and a load or two of gravel every now and then.

That fabric is suppose to be great. I didn't use it but I dug my out about a foot filled with basically riprap then 3" minus then 1" clean on top and it's been a great drive only 2 yrs old though but stays hard as a rock in all conditions..

I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease..

thanks to all three of you. i've got a good local excavator just down the road with about your level of experience, catmandoo, so will be contacting him.

at the same time i'd still like to educate myself, so i'm downloading your big epa guide and reviewing brettski's construction site again...

again, your responses are appreciated.
