I've been maintaining, and sometimes building, gravel driveways for about 50 years. Our current homestead has over a half mile of gravel driveways.
I'd suggest you find a good local excavating company. Talk to them. They will know your local dirt. They will know what local gravel is available. Unless you have your own dump truck, it is best to work through a local excavating company for getting stone and gravel delivered.
As for guides, here is a pretty good one. It takes a bit to download, but it is worth it.
Gravel Roads A good base, a good crown with good ditches and drainage, including culverts, will provide you with a driveway you can easily maintain for years with a just utility tractor and a blade and/or rake, and a load or two of gravel every now and then.
