Gotta share this. Longtime friend brought his 3yr old by to catch his first fish. Dad set him up with all the best equipment money could buy - no expenses spared - note the authentic Sponge Bob Square Pants fishin pole! (I think it was the magnum model, but I'm not sure)

First, the ceremonial "cutting off of the plastic practice fish"

Hangin out with Dad, enjoyin some quiet time on the pond...

All of a sudden...

Now keeping in mind this kid has had no formal training except with the plastic fish, check out this hook set!

And just like that, the kid lands a hefty 7-incher!

Topped it off with a quick paddle around the pond before nap-time...


I believe fishermen are born every day. Anybody got a kid that needs to catch their first fish, bring 'em by!

Good one Scott. That was funny. I had a four year old catch a 10 1/2 inch hbg last year.

Scott, that very well could be urine. There was several tense moments when the kid dicided to get up and take a walk around in the canoe. Needless to say, he didn't quite have the sea legs for it and with all us hollarin, finally got his but back in the seat.

LOL...nice illustration! Mom would have probably given you an earfull if you would have capsized.

If you are out with kiddos in a canoe they do have stablization floats/arms that make a canoe pretty stable and nearly impossible to roll. I have seen them on Cabelas website. Or, a flat bottom john boat is pretty stable, too.

Nic pics and good results. Well done and correctly IMO. Guys notice the only one with a pole is the child. You are taking them fishing not going fishing yourself.

Agreed Eric! With as much attention that kids that are fishing need, there's no time to fish yourself anyway.

Yeah, I started by running my kids off the dock and told them I didn't want to see them fishin anywhere but the other side of the pond. Heck, with all the puttin worms on the hook, helping him cast, and dislodging the hook (barbless) from the seat of his pants, his dad and I needed the whole dock.

I only wish I'd gotten a pic of him throwin his tantrum when dad said time to go home!

I am hoping that will be me with my daughter in a couple years.

CJ, you probably could start her out sooner there at the house in the aquarium.

I always let me kids fall in on their own several times to help them learn quicker (and to learn while I am there) Drake has already fallen off of 3 different docks and the pontoon boat just two weeks ago. It only took Mae and Noah one fall each to learn at his age....he is determined and not easily deterred. he will for sure be my diehard fisherman!

nate, I remember falling off a pier while battling a YP. It was a "T" pier, and I was reeling and walking backwards at the same time. I think I was around 9 at the time. That's the one and only time I fell off the pier. Somehow I managed to hold onto the rod and I did get the fish.

A couple of years ago a friend and I took his daughter and my granddaughter to a neighboring pond to get some big bluegill for a fish fry.

The girls were both seven years old, and both said they could count. We had a 5-gallon bucket, and we told them we needed 15 bluegill. They were in charge of counting.

My friend and I were busy keeping their hooks baited, unsnarled, etc.

We got back to my house, and I started filleting the bluegill. The 15 fish in the bucket somehow turned into 38 bluegill.

Oh well -- parents, grandparents, and brothers/sisters did not go home hungry. And, the girls had a blast before they got bored of catching at least 38 fish.
