Has anyone bought a Thomas or Gast rebuild-used pumps on Ebay? I think I could put together a good aeration system together for a resonable price. I hate to waste my time if there are issues.

Mike, how deep is your pond and how many surface acres?

You have to know those details first. Vain pumps are lower pressure with more volume and will only work for shallower ponds. Remember 2 feet of water is about 1PSI.

Gast Rotary Vane Pumps will not lose very much volume, if any even at their max depth of 18 feet.(Actually it is more like 20', but we tell our customers 18' just to make sure they do not place the diffusers too deep) Here is a resource for anyone looking for brand new Gast Rotary Vane Compressors:

Also Rocking Piston compressors are an excellent alternative. About a year and a half ago we began to carry Stratus Rocking Piston Compressors. These compressors have several advantages of their Gast counterparts. They produce more volume, they use less electricity, They can operate at greater depths (50' Max) and they have an additional year of warranty. Here is a link to these compressors for your reference:

Highflyer, The pond is about 1 acre in surface area. I believe the max depth after it is full, will be between 18-20 feet deep in a area 50x20 then it steps up to 14-16 feet. There are a couple intermintent holes that drop back down to 20 feet, but they are maybe 10x10. The complete diffuser aeration systems are what I think is best for a new clay pond, BUT at this point in the project, being OVER budget has caused me to re-evaluate. My wife sure is patient........Did I mention I was WAY over budget?
