snake eye
Thought i would share this photo of a small walleye I caught last night on bullshoals lake and see if anyone had any ideas what causes this. I remember catching a rainbow trout that looked like this a few years ago in about the same area.

From what I recall reading here on the forum, it's a birth defect type thing.
Did you release it?

Three possibilities:
Genetic (Like Sunil says)
Nutrient/vitamin deficiency when in the fry stage (most likely for cultured walleye vs. wild)
Parasite when in the fry or fingerling stage
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Rainbow trout can get whirling disease which is probably what you witnessed. Was not aware of that affecting any other fish species, however.

Rainbow trout can get whirling disease which is probably what you witnessed. Was not aware of that affecting any other fish species, however. TJ, Trout die very early as fingerlings from Whirling disease so he probably didn't witness a fish with whirling disease. Additionally there are very few cases of whirling disease in cultured trout anymore due to concrete raceways, and other measures to be sure one does not get fish with the disease. It was most likely one of the three I mentioned above. I've seen deformities in trout and it was not whirling disease.
