I have used plastic garbage cans before and they work well except that varmits(raccoons and mice) would chew holes in the plastic to get to the fish food. What I have found works better are metal garbage cans. I just put the bags of food in the metal can and put a bungee cord on the lid to make sure it doesn't blow off. Never had any problems when using the metal cans.
