I have just purchased the Native Feeder, from Native Outdoors. I would like to pour my feed directly into a plastic garbage can close to the pond for convenience. I have heard that the feed needs ventilation to keep well, I dont see the difference between being in a sealed bag or a plastic can. If it needs to be vented can you puncher small holes in the can. Anyone have any input on this.

My philosophy on storing feed (fish or 4-legged) is to keep it dry and vermin-proof and, for longer term storage, as cool as possible. I see no reason to ventilate fish feed in storage, and at least two reasons not to.

I agree with Theo. If you want to put it in a trash can then line the can with a thick plastic bag. When you take feed out and close the bag get as much of the air out as possible and twist tie it closed and put the can lid on.

Thanks for the info. I will use the trash bag in the can. I think I will start feeding today, the weather is looking good here in Kentucky.

I have used plastic garbage cans before and they work well except that varmits(raccoons and mice) would chew holes in the plastic to get to the fish food. What I have found works better are metal garbage cans. I just put the bags of food in the metal can and put a bungee cord on the lid to make sure it doesn't blow off. Never had any problems when using the metal cans.
