It is amazing to me sometimes of what lies under our very feet. Down the road a little ways from us, a Mastodon was found when a pond was cleaned and excavated. It is now in Rochester's Strong museum as one of the largest Mastodon remains found!

Was that black clay the only suitable clay that could be found for compaction?

It was the most suitable. It may be the only soil I've ever seen the doesn't leak at all. It's pretty amazing to see it in action. I'm sure, with it's chemical properties, that's its not the cheapest way to seal a pond, but it may prove to be one of the most effective.
