Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Raising Forage and Bait starting a forage pond

I have an old pond on my property that was once used to water cattle it has not been used for anything for quite a while. Last year it dried up due to our drought but this year stayed full until I drained it. I have a couple of questions. It was full of lilly pads and so after draining it I weed eated them I assume they will be back.
what is the best way to kill them on dry land? I want to put in bluegill and shiners. Do they do well together? I can fill the pond with well water or water from the lake which Is better? The lake is much faster with a trash pump about eight hours. the well about two days.

How big is the pond? What is your goal for the pond? Bluegill and golden shiners can coexist but if golden shiners are stoked with BG theyll inhibit the goal of a trophy BG pond.

Here is a picture after draining it. I would guess about 1/4 acre? Its about six feet deep when full. You can see all the lilly pads I cut up.

I was planning on just using it to add forage to the other pond.

Glyphosate with a surfactant should kill the lilies. Shiners and BG can be raised in the same pond. There will be egg and fry eating by both species. However, without bass present you should see ample production by both species.

I agree with CJ. If you cut the stems/leaves off of the roots, wait until they are actively growing before applying the Glyphosate.

James, I'm not sure the chemical will work without the leaf to absorb the chemical.

Dave, you are correct, it is absorbed into the plant thru the leaves.

Chemicals have been working good with the humidity here in Oklahoma.

this is the regrowth of the lily pads after one week. obviously weed whacking doesn't work

James, I've used Rodeo on my American Lotus, and that might be worth a look. It's a systemic and works slower, but I would definitely get control of the lilly pads before you go any farther.

Round up takes awhile to show results. You won't be able to tell for a few days.

The last picture you posted looked like a lotus leaf to me... I have both lilies and lotus' and that for sure looks like a lotus leaf.... Just thought I'd say that, I don't know if that will make any difference to what you try to kill them with....

James, new growth is more sensitive to chemicals. It looks like the glyphosate is working to my eyes.

Go to local mfa & get their generic glyphosphate most sell 2.5 gallons concentrated for fraction of what roundup costs. Keep sprayi g will take several applications to kill new sprouts. I did tbis on 4.5 acre lake that was 1/3 takin over by lilly pads.2 years later only had 1 patch show up & quickly killed it off. Once you spray dont let lillys get wet for at least 1 day if posible. Can take up to wek to se results depending on weather. Will also lose any other vegetation but I found the grass recovered Along the edges....good luck

JohnT is correct. You can look on the dang-old internet and find 2.5 gallon bottles for $50 even though shipping may cost $15 or so. Back in February, I got "Razor Pro HERBICIDE 41% Glyphosate 2.5 gal. Weed Killer" from "buywholesalecheap.com" for $39.99 but I haven't priced it since then.

I don't know if you have a Buchiett store in that area but I buy Glypho-pro 2.5 gal for $32 it works good they also have bucaneer glpypho for a few more $'s.. There all the same though..

James im curious to hear more about the process itself. When will you add the fish and when is target harvest date and target harvest size? Also how many fish total to start with? going to let them spawn in it at least once? Feed the small aquamax? Are you worried about birds eating them from such a small pond?


Also are you going to do this every year? or let electro survey tell you if you need to do it again or not.

If you used standard round-up in an hour or so you will start to see the effect of the surfactant. That is not the glyco working yet but is a good sign it will work. That takes a few days.

The only advice that I can give is to do two things.

Add the necessary structure to your pond for your forage to spawn prolifically, but do it in such a way that the pond can still be easily seined.

Growing lots of forage is great, but if you don't have an easy way to get them out of the forage pond and into your main pond you will always be behind the eight ball.
