I know they are small but can someone tell what these are ?

Bluegill

Regular or coppernose

CNBG

Where did you get them?

I got these from a place in Maruice, louisiana. He told me to put 2,000 in my 3/4 acre pond but i cut that to 1,500. now im trying to take out 500 or so before they get old enough to spawn. as per this web site and a wlf biologist here in louisiana. I guess the guy was tring to just sell fish.

One more thing, are these fish too small to feed on pellets, because i'm throwing AM grower for a month now and havent seen any feeding yet. they were only about 1 inch long when i put them in one month or so. I caught these with a cast net and all their little bellies were fat.

They would need smaller pellets, and time, to start feeding.

Depending on your goals for the pond, you may not want to remove any of the bluegill.

The pellets are pretty small, like 1/8th inch. should i hold off on feeding till they get a little bigger? As far as goals for my pond, I would like (if possible) to have plenty BG/LMB for my eight grandkids myself, mom, dad, everyone to catch and eat. and just enjoy!

They can eat AM 400 now and I bet they are.

So should i remove any? Some of the pellets sink, maybe they are eating the ones at the bottom, havent seen any on top yet.

Leave them all in for now. I never harvest my first brood stock.

When do you plan to add your LMB?

I would have to agree they are eating the food as well, lots of 400 sinks and I bet they are eating that and you are just not seeing them come up.

If you are still curious, take one of the fat bellied ones and cut it open to see what is in there. I am sure 1 fish removed would not hurt. Just try not to take your larger fish.

Let us know what you see if you decide to try this approach, pics would be nice as well.

i DID OPEN UP A LITTLE FAT ONE, LOOKS LIKE SOME DARK MATTER, MAY BE DIGESTED PELLETS CAUSE THEY ARE KIND OF DARK

So when should i add the LMB and how many?

How many depends on your goals. Do you want large LMB, or large BG? Or something inbetween?

When? This Fall or next Spring.

I think large BG and enough nice LMB to keep them in check, while eating some.

If so I would use 6-8 in LMB in late fall or winter (Nov-Dec) and only add 20-25.

EWEST, Yes it is the same pond, the reason i started over was because i was told to take some of the 1500 CNBG out. So i will leave them all in and continue feeding. In late fall add 20-25, 6-8 inch LMB, in the other post i was also told to put in some RES. My problem with that is i can't find any around here, and i think the LMB may be the same way. If so, is it ok to catch the LMB fishing the area and move them to my pond? Sorry for all my confusion just don't want to screw up anymore! Thanks

You could get a hatchery to ship you some small RES (50-100) in O2 bags now and add them. If you look now I bet you can find some LMB for delivery or even go pick them up in O2 bags and boxes for the trip home.

I don't like using wild caught fish. It�s hard to catch what you need and you have to be sure you are not moving unwanted stuff into the pond with them (salt bath).

Thanks Ewest, The only hatchery close to me is the one who told me to put too many CNBG, and he doesn't have RES,or LMB that size. How far away can i get fish from that would be ok for the shipping trip?

I live in VA and have gotten fish shipped to me from OH, TX and GA without issue...

Call Todd at Overton's fisheries in centerville Tx. Todd is a quality guy and his fish are among the best.

I got my Tilapia from them this year and I was very impressed with them.

BayouHunter, surprisingly, many fish farms in the south don't know what a Redear Sunfish is, because they just call them Shell Crackers. I'm sure they are available nearby, but as said earlier, they can be shipped easily.
